The Buckeye BTC is active in rescuing bull terriers from shelters or other situations that place the bull terrier in less than desirable and compromising positions.
The BBTC receives inquiries from prospective families 365 days a year. BBTC's rescue process is one that involves an adoption application, interviewing, breed education , "home visit" and an adoption fee upon placement. Months may pass before a bully is available. There are some weeks where we have several to place in a loving home. The BBTC strives to place each bull terrier into the BEST home available. Knowledge of the breed, security, other pets in the home, small children, ability to provide veterinarian care, adequate food & water and the special circumstances of the bull terrier are considered before placement in a loving, permanent home. Buckeye spays & neuters all intact dogs we rescue. A bully will not be placed that is not sexually altered. In addition, the animal will receive a health check-up & temperament test before any placement. Our adoption fee is typically $350. This is to cover our costs of veterinary care, etc. This is quite a deal considering purchasing a pet quality Bull Terrier can cost as much as $1,500. Many of our rescue Bullies are best suited as only dog homes and often do not get along well with cats. We do get dogs that are well socialized and even love cats, but they are typically the exception.
Buckeye spends a considerable amount of time educating prospective Bully homes about working with reputable breeders. There are many so-called 'breeders' in Ohio and surrounding states that are not considered reputable (see Breed Information for details). Many of these dogs become our rescues-they are placed in unsuitable homes or have health and/or temperament issues. These 'breeders' typically do not support their buyers and never take their dogs back-their only motivation is money. If you are considering a Bull Terrier, consider a rescue dog and help a special Bully! If you are convinced a puppy is what you want, PLEASE make sure to work with a reputable breeder!
To start the adoption process, please click on the link below to the Bull Terrier Club of America Rescue and Support Committee site and go to "Adoption Application".We receive all applications in Ohio automatically and maintain them for up to a year. This site also lists available rescue dogs by state. Please keep in mind that not all dogs get listed here-just because Ohio does not have a dog listed does not mean we aren't actively working on a placement. Also, keep in mind that many regional clubs prefer not to place their dogs out of state. Thank you for your interest and let us know if you have any questions.
